· Now for my product I have brought to you today a line graph and multiple pictures. It may not sound interesting right now but just wait. Now during my study of meditation I have measured my blood pressure before and after each of my meditation sessions. As you can see, after just one hour of meditation my blood pressure has dropped at least 10 beats per minute, sometimes more, after each session.
· (Present pictures of different meditation styles and briefly explain the history behind each style.)
Slide 10- My Mentor
· I couldn’t have gotten through this whole project without the help of my mentor Julia Gunnels. Julia started meditating about 13 years ago and still continues to meditate every day. I believe that I could not have found a better mentor to help guide me throughout my project than Julia. She’s a very kind and compassionate person, and has helped me greatly to complete my project. Julia practices Modern Day meditation every day, and that is the style of meditation that I have been practicing during my sessions. In Modern Day Meditation there is no right or wrong way to meditate. The main purpose of Modern Day Meditation is to find your inner self and have a better appreciation for the world around you. Julia has introduced me to Modern Day Meditation and talks to me in a soothing voice, guiding me through my meditation sessions. I couldn’t have picked a better mentor for this project, and I thank Julia for taking time out of her schedule to guide me through this project.
Slide 11-Successes and Challenges
· Throughout this project I have ran into challenges and have had my successes. Let us start with what I was successful with first. Researching always comes easy if you are interested enough in the topic. Meditation was something that interested me very much, so researching the ins and outs of meditation, thankfully, came pretty easy to me. For me, learning to meditate properly was very successful. Modern Day Meditation is a great style of meditation to choose. In Modern Day Meditation there is no right or wrong way to meditate, you position yourself whichever way is more comfortable to you.
· The challenges I ran through during this project are the ones I expected to run into from the very beginning. The first problem that I ran into was the research paper, surprise surprise. I have never written a research paper before now and was not aware about a little rule that could affect the whole paper. That little rule being, no possession words. Before my paper was edited I had multiple possession words in each paragraph. Now imagine my surprise when I found out that I had to basically re-write my whole paper. But alas I got through this challenge with time.
· Meeting with Julia for our meditating sessions was surprisingly a challenge to me as well. Julia owns her own business and I work 35 hours a week. Our schedules just seemed to clash. Now how I got through this problem was just asking my boss off every Saturday to be able to meet with Julia. We eventually caught up with our sessions thankfully.
· Now the biggest challenge I’ve met, and the one I am still working on is this whole 8-11 minute speech that I am presenting to you right now. I am not a very big public speaker and I am usually not that outgoing. Writing this presentation out was no problem; it’s the whole, having to actually present it in front of you kind people. The only way I can get through this problem is just to suck it up and be my normal self……But practicing helped a lot too.
Slide 12- Conclusion
· After listening to this interesting and informational speech, I would hope that I satisfied your needs of learning what’s really behind the practice of meditation. But let me just recap on what we’ve learned today. Meditation benefits many different people in many different ways including medically, academically, and even socially. Since the leading cause of stress is high blood pressure meditation is a great way to deal with stress and anxiety. Doing this also helps students deal with large workloads and concentration skills. Meditation helps improve people’s daily social lives as well; giving them better emotions and feelings towards themselves and others.
· Again I would like to thank Julia Gunnels for taking time out of her schedule and agreeing to meet with me almost every week to help guide me through this project. I would also like to thank all of you here today for taking time out of your schedule to sit here and letting me educate you on meditation.
· This concludes my presentation; thank you for your time, I hope you all enjoyed it. If any of you have any questions I would be more than happy to answer them for you.
- Hello I’m Amanda Pisano and I’m here today to give a presentation on meditation. Everybody knows what meditation is, but I’m here today to go into a little more detail about it with you. To many people meditation means just sitting down for a long period of time with your eyes closed. But let me tell you, there’s a lot more to meditation than that.
Slide 2-Outline
- During this presentation I will be discussing my research paper which includes how meditation benefits you medically, academically, and socially. You will be introduced to my product, and who my mentor is including how they have guided me throughout this project. I will also share with you how I was successful, and the challenges I ran through during my research.
Slide 3- How meditation benefits you medically
- Meditation benefits many different people in many different ways. Medically, meditation benefits people in numerous ways. For example, stress relief. I’d bet you over half of the world’s population have gone through stress related problems. Meditation is a fantastic way to deal with stress and anxiety. Can you tell me the leading cause of stress? Even if you can I have to answer for you right here. High blood pressure.
- During the course of meditation your breathing process changes. It slows your breathing pattern which as a result lowers your oxygen consumption. Doing this lowers your blood pressure. As an example I have taken my blood pressure before and after every meditation session I have done. At the beginning of my first session I measured my heart rate at 90 beats per minute. By the end of my hour long session my heart rate had lowered to 80 beats per minute.
- This breathing pattern not only lowers your blood pressure but also decreases risks of lung diseases. In 1982 the Surgeon General’s report stated that cigarette smoking is the major single cause of cancer mortality. Did you know that cigarette smoking causes 1 in 5 deaths in the United States? Now I could go on and on about the statistical views on cigarette smoking, but my main reason for telling you this is to let you in on a little secret. Meditation helps people quit smoking more than standard treatments and prevention programs. Pretty interesting right?
- Before I go on I would like to point out that meditation comes at no costs. Meditation is completely free and has no side effects. Taking medication for any types of medical problems usually comes with side effects; it’s like a package deal. A package deal that you would be paying off for long periods of time.
Slide 4-How meditation benefits you academically
- Like I said before, meditation does wonders for stress and anxiety. That being said,, imagine how much stress students go through during their school career. Most students strive to do well in school and in doing that always come with stress. Yet again another package deal. Meditation is always a solution to that type of problem.
- With all the work loads students pile up on, especially in college, it might be difficult for them to zero their concentration down on one assignment. In the meditation process you are setting aside time to be able to sort through your feelings and emotions one by one. Doing this you are slowly but steadily improving concentration skills. This is exactly what students need.
- If you are impressed now prepare to be amazed. Recent studies have proven that mediation improved students IQ scores. Starting at controlled scores of 116, meditation has seemed to improve these scores to 121.
Slide 7- How meditation benefits you socially
- Now if you thought that was the end of this stimulating presentation you though wrong. Meditation doesn’t only benefit people’s lives medically and academically, it benefits people’s social lives as well.
- Before, when I said meditation sets aside time for you to sort through your emotions one by one, I wasn’t lying. What this is helping people do is controlling their emotions. Have you ever seen someone just snap at another person for no apparent reason? Or have you yourself ever done this? Meditation makes people kinder and more compassionate. And i you don’t believe me, try meditating yourself and tell me how you feel afterwards.
- If you know someone who is seeking to feel better about themselves and toward other people, introduce meditation to them right away. From my own experience in meditation throughout this project, as a result I feel lighter, happier, and have a more appreciation for the world around me. And I guarantee that if you give meditation a shot you will begin to feel this way as well.
- 9% of adults in the United States are depressed. Now that may not seem like many people, but taking about 10% of 313,000,000 people come out to about 31,300,000 depressed people in the United States. Wouldn’t it be nice if you wouldn’t have to take medication to make you feel better about yourself and no longer depressed? Well meditation has been proven to benefit people with depression, as seen in this graph.
